Mista Boxx 2004 11 01
2008-02-24
After Classick Material stopped broadcasting in October 2004, host Mista Boxx ran a short lived segment on Project Bounce. I have two “Mista Boxx” shows, this one and next week. They never ran again as far as I know. I think there was one ‘classick material’ reunion in 2005 but I never heard it. If anyone has any more classick material recordings on tape, give em up! My boy todd over at classicradiorips has one from way back in 2002 – check it out here.
No talking on this one, since Mista Boxx does it solo. Interesting to hear Boxx’s selections without his co-DJs. Something I always loved about this hip hop radio thing is each DJ has their own unique personality that you can feel through their music. Check Rhyme Mania ‘99 — its up there on my list of my favorite tracks of all time. Also the last unknown track on set 4 (“never play the front line/ I be deep in the cut”) – let me know if you know what that’s called, sick track.

Circle Research 2006 09 13
2008-02-24
For those that don’t know Circle Research is Astro, Nik aka Nix The Finger Prince and Big Tweeze. These guys put it down for 10 years, most of that on the CKLN 88.1 Wednesday 2-4AM slot. On January 30 2008 they broadcasted their last show. Seems there’s less and less college radio hip hop in Toronto as time goes on…
But never fear, because Circle Research now exists in podcast form. Now these guys are providing the beats from the comfort of home.. the first show was February 20. check them out:
The Circle Research Show podcast.
Now if anyone’s still reading.. this here is a classic episode of Circle Research from September 2006. Some really old school hip hop on set1, some 90s on set2. Set 3 has some breaks that you’ll surely recognize if you listen to any hip hop at all. Loving this shit..

DJ Law 2006 12 18 Cancon
2007-12-29
DJ Law drops this set which is mostly Canadian content. Ghetto Concept going back to ‘92, Frankenstein to ‘95.. these are some real classic Toronto hip hop tracks. And, to top it all off, we even get “Kish – Crates to Concrete” — a track I never thought I’d hear again. I don’t know whether the two unknowns are Toronto rap but it wouldn’t surprise me.

http://classicradiorips.blogspot.com
I just noticed this new website is linking to me, and I have to say I’m very happy about it. This site has some older Toronto hip hop recordings, 90s and early 2000s. I really only started listening to Toronto hip hop radio in 2003 so all of these shows are new to me! Right now he’s got Powermove Show, Circle Research (they were on Project Bounce??!), and two Team Bravo 180 Show. I’m listening to one of those — march 12 2001 project bounce.mp3 — now.
Big respect to pottytoddy for starting the site! I know there’s more people out there with far deeper ‘crates’ than me. Hopefully more of them come out of the woodwork. If any of you are out there and just don’t know how to convert from tape to mp3, or just need someone to bug you, LET ME KNOW. Email me: fm416 dot mailbox at gmail.

DJ Mensa 2007 05 14
2007-12-29
DJ Mensa (myspace here) was a staple DJ on the recently cancelled Project Bounce. His style is upbeat: lots of music for the ladies and the homies alike, striking a balance between dance music and the real hiphop for the heads. Check out this mix, which is really two mixes: a bunch of dope 80s/90s tracks, and then a 2Pac segment.

Sound Junction 2007 06 28
2007-12-29
If you remember the last set I posted, Sound Junction is one of those CHRY shows with that lo-fi sound. DJ O aka O-nonymous tears up the tables with set of oldschool hip hop. Check out the Sound Junction myspace. This marks the last SJ set I have, but damn I gotta start recording them more often. You can check them out Thursday (technically Friday) nights from 12-2AM on CHRY 105.5FM if you live in the York U area, or channel 945 on Rogers digital.

Here’s Circle Research. Astro the Guillotine and Big Tweeze doin it up lovely. Astro drops an educational hour-long funk set, and rounds off the show with dope 90s hip hop. Normally I wouldn’t post the names of funk/breaks, namely because they’re impossible to identify and I’m certainly not a real head – tbh, I don’t know shit ;) But CKLN’s playlists provide full disclosure on what is usually some seriously guarded trade secrets. So as Tweeze says, all you aspiring producers go and sample these tracks. For the rest of us, just listen. The track that stands out for me on these sets is “Summertime”. Considering the date (June ‘07), this was a real summer banger for me. I honestly had no idea it was The Fresh Prince until I looked it up.
