THE DOPEST SHIT I EVER HEARD IN MY MOTHERFUCKIN’ LIFE

This one started it all for me.. this is the earliest recording I have – June 1 2004.

Every Sunday I stayed up to listen to classick material, the best hip hop show on radio. I only recorded it for 4 months before they suddenly stopped broadcasting. The demise of classick material led me to dig for more shows.. before long I was recording just about every show in the city.

Bozack Morris said Toronto has some “world class hip hop shows”. Classick Material was one of them, no doubt. I promise to have all 12 classick material recordings up by the end of 2008. So check out the classick material archive for a few others. Every hip hop fan needs to hear these.

Note this one got cut short somehow. Only the first hour was recorded.

After Classick Material stopped broadcasting in October 2004, host Mista Boxx ran a short lived segment on Project Bounce. I have two “Mista Boxx” shows, this one and next week. They never ran again as far as I know. I think there was one ‘classick material’ reunion in 2005 but I never heard it. If anyone has any more classick material recordings on tape, give em up! My boy todd over at classicradiorips has one from way back in 2002 – check it out here.

No talking on this one, since Mista Boxx does it solo. Interesting to hear Boxx’s selections without his co-DJs. Something I always loved about this hip hop radio thing is each DJ has their own unique personality that you can feel through their music. Check Rhyme Mania ’99 — its up there on my list of my favorite tracks of all time. Also the last unknown track on set 4 (“never play the front line/ I be deep in the cut”) – let me know if you know what that’s called, sick track.

EDIT: Thanks to jw for identifying one track. There’s still a bunch more left to identify, and it’s now going on three years I’ve been trying to get that one track. Help me out! fm416 dot mailbox at gmail dot com. -May 13 2007

I decided to split this show up into two segments for a couple of reasons, one, it’s easier for me and for you because things go awry when I post more than one set in one post, and six is out of the question. The real reason is so I can add this preamble and have it make sense: There’s a bunch of tracks in this segment that I really, really would like identified, but one in particular: after MOP and before Hieroglyphics. The Classick Material crew played this track more than once in my recordings but I have never been able to identify it. It is a female MC, sounds like 2000-2004, she doesn’t drop any names or places but somehow I get the impression it’s Canadian content — although I could be totally wrong. Please check out Set 5, around 18:00, give it a listen, and tell me if you’ve heard this track anywhere else! Maybe they know what’s up. I’m in the dark on this one. Here’s some of the bars, perhaps Google may bring some who know what they’re talking about here:

I'm growin every day, mark what I say
I'm tracin a path, from the past to the future
Gotta be my own woman, stand on my own two
Eat food, get paid, despite what others do...
..I got pets, two cats and they act just like kids
When they hungry, they cop fits and them collectors want money
So how I'ma let a stranger up and take that from me
When ??? jerks ain't no friends to me
Could solitude be the remedy?
Nah, I need love in my life, friends by my side
Live stimulation, romantic conversation
Good vibe relations, don't think I'm askin for much but
These things don't just fall out the sky...

Drop me a line if you know who this MC is or anything about the track! One way or another enjoy it, it’s one of the tightest tracks I’ve ever heard. And of course if you can identify any of the “easier” onesany of the elusive ones on Sets 4 and 6, please do.

"Taste what I hate out the bottle,
goes down sweet when I swallow,
though it smells like contradiction..."

I figured I’d get back to basics, remind myself why I started this site — to share Classick Material with the masses. I still stand by my goal of eventually posting each and every recording of this great hip hop show that I have acquired – only a dozen or so but at six sets per show, that does work out to quite a bit.

This is from mid July two years ago, and still serves my musical needs today ;)

The rapidshare link on this page is ancient, and therefore dead. If you want any of these sets, mail me at fm416.mailbox at gmail and I’ll be happy to repost it when I can. Be sure to tell me which one!

Been a while since I updated, but no bad links in over 30 days! So I guess it’s becoming more popular, and I’ll help by posting a bunch more this week.

Here’s some more Classick Material for your ears.

This first set does a nice job of covering the rap phenomena of the late 80’s. In only 30 minutes it manages to cover the “Roxanne” craze and the “Bridge Wars”. Check out the rarely heard response track to The Bridge is Over by MC Poet. Apparently someone did the research and there is over 100 Roxanne related/response tracks. Crazy. Luckily this one only covers the major hilights of that infamous era.

More old school heat on this set. Not much I can say, but it doesn’t get much better than this.
